Beth Balshaw

Ph.D., R. Psych.

I am a Registered Psychologist, committed to providing quality therapy that is personalized to meet clients’ specific needs. I entered the helping profession as a therapist in 1988 and have thoroughly enjoyed working in private practice since 1993. My education includes a doctorate in Counselling Psychology, training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) and Clinical Hypnosis, ongoing professional development and life experience gained through roles of wife, mother, and grandmother. I have found that this blend of formal education and lived experience enhances my understanding of issues that clients face at various stages of life.

In my general practice in psychology, I offer individual and couple therapy to both women and men.  My clients deal with a variety of issues including depression, anxiety, stress management, trauma recovery, self-esteem issues, relationship concerns and communication skills.  I have a special interest in helping people understand their anger and discover constructive ways to express it.

I take a collaborative approach to therapy, encouraging clients to be actively involved in setting and working toward their goals. Together, we develop a meaningful therapeutic relationship that supports the change process. I help clients to identify and enhance their strengths and resources, to reduce or remove any barriers that may be getting in their way and to examine their issues in context. I enjoy playing a role in empowering clients to enhance all aspects of their well-being.

Sharon Carlton

MSc, R.Psych

I am a registered psychologist who offers supportive, comprehensive and effective therapy. I help children, teens, individuals, couples and families to feel better quickly, to meet their goals, and to create more satisfying lives. Therapy is teamwork. I work together with my clients to build upon the strengths they already possess and to learn the skills and strategies necessary to make meaningful and lasting changes in their lives.

Since I began my practice in 1990, I have enjoyed working with a wide variety of clients and concerns. I have specialized expertise in treating depression, anxiety, marital and family relationship issues, and eating/body image disorders. I also work extensively with children, teens and their parents to find solutions to emotional, behavioral, social and communication problems within the family. I’m a mother of three teens and a committed volunteer with youth community athletics. These experiences also enhance my understanding of child and family development and dynamics.

I welcome clients to experience counseling within a warm, yet challenging, solution-focussed environment. The specific techniques will be tailored to best meet individual needs and chosen from those strategies that are supported by research evidence. These may include cognitive behavioral therapy, clinical hypnosis, EMDR, communication and social skills training and parent coaching.

Charles Coleman

MA, R.Psych, RMFT

I am a Registered Psychologist and a Registered Marriage and Family Therapist with many years of experience helping a diverse group of people overcome their hurdles. I strive to equip my clients with the tools necessary to conquer the issues in their lives. I encourage them to move dynamically forward and effectively manage anger, depression, stress and moods, and to develop healthy habits in order to see them living fulfilling lives. I have a passion for helping couples and families including those from diverse ethnic backgrounds and work with blended families to improve their relationships and bring about the healthy changes that are required.

I started my education obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Zoology before I chose Psychology. I acquired a diploma in Applied Psychology from the University of Calgary and a Masters degree in Counselling Psychology from City University in Bellevue Washington. I have tremendously enjoyed private practice in the last few years after working with the Calgary Counselling Centre and the Calgary Health Region Mental Health department.

I am excited about the opportunity to offer my services to new clients. I am actively pursuing eCounselling through Skype, phone and email as a pragmatic means to deliver greater value to my existing clients as well as attract new clients who would otherwise find themselves without access to traditional counseling. I maintain evening and Saturday appointment hours to provide the flexibility that is required by many in our fine city.

Terry Penner

Registered Clinical Social Worker, MSW, RSW

I am a registered clinical, master’s level social worker who has worked with clients in the Calgary area for over 25 years. I initially worked for a number of years as the clinical supervisor for what was then the AADAC out patient clinic in Calgary. In this capacity I supervised a number of therapists and students in the development of their clinical skills as well as managed a small caseload of my own. Since entering private practice approximately 22 years ago, I have worked extensively with couples, individuals and families with a a variety of presenting problems ranging from addiction related issues, to a wide range of marital problems.

One of the strong skills that I have developed as a result of my client experience is the ability to quickly grasp the nature of the problems that clients are facing and as a result begin clarity and relief in a prompt manor.

I have also been the major service provider to a large corporation for over 20 years offering counselling, assessment and on site consultation. In addition I have provided counselling services to a number of public and private agencies. In this context I have learned to work efficiently with the business community recognizing both corporate as well as client needs. I have trained extensively in a variety of counselling methodologies including cognitive therapy, hypnosis, EMDR, and most recently marital therapy through the Gottman Institute. I maintain regular training and updating in all areas of specialty (addiction, stress, marital therapy).

I am active in a number of athletic pursuits including karate, golf, running and yoga, all of which not only help me to understand performance issues but also provide a degree of credibility when life style or stress issues are involved in counselling work.

Anne-Marie Bergen

M. Sc., R.Psych.

I am a Registered Psychologist who believes that all persons have the ability within them to heal. As a therapist, I facilitate clients' unique and innate journey towards mental, emotional and spiritual health. My specialty is in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy. It has been found to be effective in reducing and/or resolving the emotional pain of traumatic memories. Research has proven it to be particularly efficacious for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

I have been a Facilitator for the EMDR Institute located in California, training other therapists in this therapeutic method. I have also been an Approved Consultant for the EMDR International Association located in Austin, Texas. I regularly attend EMDRIA Conferences, as well as other workshops in Cognitive Behavioral and Systems (couple, family) approaches. I received a Master of Science degree in Psychology from the University of Calgary in 1991 and became a Chartered Psychologist in Alberta in 1992. In my private practice, I treat individuals (from teens to the more mature years), couples and families.

I also have a keen interest in individuals' understanding of their own spiritual resources and strengths which become a part of their innate healing process – bringing meaning to their trauma, and compassion for themselves and others. I consider it a privilege to be a part of this journey toward self-understanding, hope and even joy.

I am a Registered Psychologist who provides individual counselling and treatment for adults with mental health disorders and/or emotional problems of living. I received my doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Calgary. As a scientist/practitioner, I base my clinical work on evidence-based interventions that have been established as effective by research. For the last 12 years, I have worked in the public health system, providing assessment and treatment in an outpatient mental health clinic. I am trained in a range of therapeutic approaches, including cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal, problem-solving, supportive-expressive and group therapy. The kinds of difficulties my clients typically present include depression; anxiety; adjustment to significant life events (e.g., grief, trauma, illness/injury); assertiveness training; self-esteem concerns; stress management; personality disorders and relationship issues. My dissertation research was in the area of physical disability (spinal cord injury) and relationship satisfaction. Based on my research, clinical and lived experience, I feel comfortable working with individuals facing these challenges.

I believe that, within the context of a confidential, warm and safe therapeutic relationship, one can find hope and relief from the symptoms and/or problems that are impairing your quality of life. My goal is to work with you in a collaborative way to help you articulate your goals for therapy and keep us focused on identifying and eliminating the barriers to experiencing the quality of life that you desire.
